Individual Health Insurance

Some people don’t have access to group insurance. They are between jobs and the State Continuation or COBRA has expired or is too expensive. They are working for a small organization that doesn’t offer group health insurance. Or, their employer does offer group insurance but the cost of the dependent coverage is unaffordable. An option for these people is to purchase an individual health insurance policy – insurance coverage they buy themselves.

Beth is 32 years old and has recently been divorced. She was insured under her spouse’s group health policy and elected the continuation plan when the divorce was finalized. That policy will expire soon. Beth works for a small nonprofit organization as the only employee and is not eligible for group health insurance. She is considering the purchase of an individual health policy.

Individual health policies could cost less than a group policy. However, the coverage may not be the same. All group policies are required to provide certain coverage such as annual check-ups and maternity. This coverage may not be available under an individual policy. A plan design or outline of coverage should be requested when searching for a quote to make it easier to compare policies. Look at the deductibles and co-pays required, not just the monthly premium, to determine your total cost.

Many employers offer group health insurance policies for their employees and dependents. However, few employers are able to pay the cost of dependent coverage. Purchasing an individual health policy may be an option to cover dependents.

Most carriers allow you to get a quote on-line by entering some basic information about yourself. Before the policy can be issued, however, you will be required to complete a health questionnaire and be approved by the carrier. Do not cancel any existing policies until you have been approved for your new individual health policy.
